What is an Egg Cream?
Originating in New York in the late 19th century, the egg cream is a classic fountain drink that consists of milk, seltzer water, and chocolate syrup. Despite its name, an egg cream doesn’t actually contain any eggs or cream!
History of the Egg Cream
The exact origins of the egg cream are a bit murky, but it is believed to have been created by a Brooklyn candy shop owner named Louis Auster in the late 1800s. The drink became popular in New York City and has since become a beloved nostalgic treat.
Ingredients and Preparation
To make an egg cream, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- Cold milk
- Seltzer water
- Chocolate syrup
To prepare an egg cream, start by adding a small amount of chocolate syrup to the bottom of a tall glass. Then, pour in some cold milk until the glass is about one-third full. Finally, slowly top off the drink with seltzer water while stirring vigorously to create the signature frothy top.
Myth vs. Reality
Despite the name, an egg cream does not contain any eggs or cream. The term “egg cream” is said to be a corruption of the phrase “a chocolate cream,” which refers to a similar drink made with cream rather than milk.
