How to Make Kombucha: A Beginner’s Guide

Welcome to the world of homemade kombucha! This fermented tea has gained popularity for its numerous health benefits and delicious flavors. Making kombucha at home is a fun and rewarding process that allows you to customize the taste to your preference. In this guide, we will take you through the steps to make your own batch of this probiotic-rich beverage.

Ingredients:

  • 1 SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast)
  • 1 cup of starter tea (previously brewed kombucha)
  • 1 gallon of filtered water
  • 8-10 tea bags (black, green, or a combination)
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • Large glass jar
  • Cloth and rubber band for covering the jar

Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Tea Mixture

Boil the filtered water and steep the tea bags for around 10-15 minutes. Remove the tea bags and stir in the sugar until it dissolves. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature.

2. Combine the Ingredients

Transfer the tea mixture to the glass jar. Add the SCOBY and the starter tea. Cover the jar with a cloth and secure it with a rubber band to keep out debris while allowing airflow.

3. Fermentation Process

Place the jar in a warm, dark place away from direct sunlight. Let the kombucha ferment for 7-14 days, depending on your taste preference. The longer it ferments, the more tangy it will become.

4. Taste Test and Bottle

After the fermentation period, taste the kombucha. If it’s too sour, ferment for a shorter time next batch. Once ready, bottle the kombucha in airtight containers, leaving some space at the top, and store in the refrigerator.

Enjoy Your Homemade Kombucha!

Congratulations! You have successfully brewed your first batch of kombucha. Feel free to experiment with additional flavors like fruits or herbs in the secondary fermentation. Remember to start a new batch using some of your homemade kombucha as the starter tea.
