How Long Does Sushi Last in the Fridge?

Sushi is a popular Japanese dish enjoyed by many around the world. Whether you’ve ordered sushi for takeout or made it at home, you may find yourself wondering how long sushi can last when stored in the fridge. Proper storage is key to maintaining the quality and safety of your sushi.

Factors Affecting Sushi Shelf Life

The shelf life of sushi depends on various factors such as the type of sushi, ingredients used, and how it is stored. Here are some general guidelines on how long different types of sushi can last in the fridge:

Sashimi:

  • Fresh sashimi can typically last up to 1-2 days in the fridge.
  • It is best to consume sashimi on the day of purchase for the best taste and quality.

Sushi Rolls (Maki):

  • Sushi rolls can usually last for about 24 hours when stored properly in the fridge.
  • Make sure to wrap the sushi tightly in plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.

Nigiri Sushi:

  • Nigiri sushi with raw fish should be consumed within 24 hours for optimal freshness.
  • If the nigiri contains cooked ingredients, it may last up to 2-3 days in the fridge.

Tips for Storing Sushi

To maximize the shelf life of your sushi, here are some tips for proper storage:

  • Store sushi in an airtight container or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap to prevent exposure to air.
  • Keep sushi in the coldest part of the fridge, ideally at temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
  • Avoid storing sushi near strong-smelling foods, as sushi can easily absorb odors.
  • Always consume sushi with raw fish within a day of purchase to ensure safety.

When to Discard Sushi

If you notice any signs of spoilage such as off smells, slimy texture, or discoloration, it is best to discard the sushi to avoid any risk of foodborne illness.

In Conclusion

Properly stored sushi can last for up to a couple of days in the fridge, depending on the type and ingredients. By following these storage tips and guidelines, you can enjoy your sushi while ensuring freshness and safety.
