How to Use a Wine Key Like an Expert

Opening a bottle of wine with a wine key, also known as a waiter’s corkscrew, can seem intimidating if you’re not familiar with the tool. However, with a little practice and the right technique, you can easily become an expert at using a wine key. Follow these steps to master the art of opening a bottle of wine like a pro.

Step 1: Prepare the Wine Key

Before you begin, make sure the wine key is fully extended with the corkscrew spiral exposed. Most wine keys have a small knife or foil cutter at the tip—use this to cut the foil or capsule around the neck of the bottle. Remove the foil to expose the cork.

Step 2: Insert the Worm Screw

Position the tip of the worm screw (the spiral corkscrew) at the center of the cork. Insert the worm screw into the cork at a slight angle, ensuring it goes in straight and penetrates the cork completely. Twist the corkscrew into the cork by turning the handle of the wine key clockwise until only one curl remains above the cork.

Step 3: Leveraging the Fulcrum

Once the worm screw is securely in the cork, place the first fulcrum of the wine key on the lip of the bottle and the second fulcrum on the edge of the telescoping lever. Hold the wine bottle firmly with one hand while using the handle of the wine key to lift the cork out of the bottle. Apply gentle and even pressure to avoid breaking the cork.

Step 4: Removing the Cork

Continue to twist and lift the cork until it is almost out of the bottle. Then, use your hand to gently pull the cork the rest of the way out. Be sure to keep the bottle at a slight angle to prevent any sediment from falling into the wine.

Step 5: Enjoy Your Wine

Once the cork is removed, pour yourself a glass of wine and savor the flavors and aromas. You can use the wine key to recork the bottle if you don’t finish it all at once or invest in a wine stopper to preserve the wine for later enjoyment.

With these steps, you can confidently open a bottle of wine using a wine key like a seasoned sommelier. Practice makes perfect, so don’t be afraid to try different techniques until you find what works best for you.
